When you’re experiencing anxiety, there’s nothing you want more than to make it stop.  Whether it’s shaky hands, a rapid heartbeat, racing thoughts, restlessness, or irritability, symptoms of anxiety are not only uncomfortable and frustrating, but they can also be incredibly frightening.  The harder you work to make it look like you’re okay on the outside, the worse you feel inside.

What if you could relate to your stress in a new way?

When it comes to the treatment of anxiety, I take a systematic and thorough approach.  It’s always important to identify triggers and define coping mechanisms.  However, I often find that the very thing that causes anxiety, is a part of a person’s life that can’t be removed.  The reality is that common stressors include work stress, raising children, finances, health issues, and relationships with people we love. We often can’t remove these things from our life, nor would we want to.  The work we do in therapy is learning how to manage and respond to triggers versus reacting to them.

I help individuals change their relationship to stress in order to live a more balanced life.

You may be thinking, “You don’t understand, I have always had anxiety and too many things on my To-Do list.  I can’t imagine how I am going to be less anxious.  Worrying is a way of life for me.”  In order to heal, you have to be ready and have the desire to make change for yourself. It takes commitment.  Not only showing up for weekly therapy appointments, but also being an active participant in your own healing.  Consistency is key. You have to make yourself a priority.

The goal is always to get you feeling better as quickly as possible. However, it is important to understand the root cause of anxiety.  Similarly, to how a functional medicine doctor identifies the root cause of illness (versus medicating symptoms), it’s important to find out what the anxiety may be telling you. It’s learning to listen to your body’s signals. Sometimes during this process, we uncover a trauma.  Or individuals finally feel ready to talk about emotional difficulties they experienced in childhood.  The therapeutic relationship we develop, creates a secure and safe place to heal.

In order to make lasting change, it is essential to apply insights and practice the skills learned in therapy.  Throughout our work together, we will continue to assess what is working for you and address any outstanding issues that remain.
